Professor Coimbra received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, in 1998. He served as an assistant professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia from 1999 to 2000, then as an assistant professor and later associate professor at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, from 2000 to 2006. He was an associate professor and founding Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics graduate program at UC Merced from 2006 to 2011. He joined the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego in July 2011.
