Chemistry and Biochemistry
Associate Professor
The Ortony lab designs and synthesizes new molecules that spontaneously self-assemble in water. We use these nanostructure to address a range of engineering applications that require capture, transport, or release of chemical species in water at the nanoscale. We study geometric morphologies by electron microscopy and X-ray scattering techniques, and we use electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to understand conformational dynamics and surface interactions.
Bio
Before joining UC San Diego Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in 2023, Julia Ortony was an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. She earned her Ph.D. from UC Santa Barbara under Songi Han and was a postdoctoral fellow in Samuel Stupp’s group at Northwestern University.
Since starting her research group in 2016, Prof. Ortony’s team has focused on supramolecular chemistry and dynamics.
Details about her research program can be found here.
