Program in Materials Science and Engineering (MATS) Mentoring Standards

The Program in Materials Science and Engineering (MATS) Mentoring Standards provide guidance for faculty advisors and graduate student advisees as they develop a productive, respectful, and supportive advising relationship. Because MATS spans multiple departments and schools at UC San Diego, the standards are designed to be flexible rather than prescriptive, recognizing that advising styles vary and that students thrive under different approaches.

These mentoring standards outline shared expectations for advisors and advisees, emphasizing clear communication, timely feedback, appropriate guidance and resources, and a safe, inclusive research environment. They also highlight the importance of mutual accountability, regular progress evaluations, and constructive feedback to support student success and professional development throughout the program.
